Back to the Grind

We bid a fond farewell to Brad today as he has now started his surgery rotations. It looks like he will be leaving us every morning at about 3:30am or so and will be working at the hospital until about 6:30 or 7pm. He will get to "sleep in" on Saturdays as he won't have to report until 5:30, but he will be home at 10am or so. And hopefully (crossing my fingers) he will have Sunday off all together. He will have call only once a week where he will have to work his full day (starting at 3:30 am), spend the night in the hospital and won't get off until the following day at noon! With that schedule it is hard to believe that he got the "easy" surgery rotation! Best of luck to Brad as he starts playing doctor!!

Knowing we had this grueling schedule coming up we spent this last week or so working hard and playing hard. We finally finished staining the new fence we put up this spring, Heather finished getting all of her plants in her new vegetable garden that Brad built for her, and tied up a bunch of other odds and ends projects that needed our attention. We also spent a couple of days down at the beach, swimming at the YMCA and Brad went golfing.

Ella and I are sad to be home alone without Daddy, who makes things so much more interesting!

Wish Brad good luck with the next 8 weeks. . .well, really with the next year!

Peek-a-boo

As most kids her age do, Ella has been loving playing peek-a-boo with everyone lately. She hides her face (usually in us) and then waits for us to say "Where's Ella?" a few times before she "surprises" us. It is, of course, a fun little game to play with her.

However, yesterday when we went out to the beach with some friends she took the peek-a-boo game to the next level. She began "hiding" from us by burying her face in the sand. She honestly would sit with her face in the sand for at least a minute before she would say boo to us! I almost started to worry that she would suffocate with her face there in the sand. It was so funny! I had to take a picture of her face when she emerged from her little game.

Oh, and by the way, she didn't like it at all when I had to clean off all of the sand on her face before going home!

Utah Trip --- Bummer!

We just got back from our week long trip to Utah, and I must say we are pretty bummed out! We always look forward all year long to our visits home, but this last one just didn't measure up. It started out with Ella getting sick the day before we flew home. Then, the evening of our first day home I got sick as a dog and was up the whole night throwing up. If this wasn't bad enough, it seemed like whatever little bug Ella and I came down with was extremely contagious as everyone we had seen the first few days came down with the same thing. We even cleaned the whole house with bleach in order to get rid of the germs and thought we had taken care of everything before we had a little early birthday party for Ella. Well, despite our best efforts, people who came to the party still got sick! I couldn't believe it. So not only did we feel like we shouldn't see anyone else because of our sickness, but I also felt so guilty for starting this plague that spread through our family and friends. We finally decided that we should just stay away from everyone and as such, didn't even get to see half of the people we wanted to. Overall the trip was just a bust. . .not what we had planned it being at all! I'm so bummed out because of our bad luck, and what makes it worse we will not get to see anyone again until Christmas.

So to those of you we saw while we were in town--we're sorry we got you sick. And to those of you we didn't see (there are many), we are so sorry we missed you but glad we didn't give you our friendly little stomach bug. Now we will just be eagerly awaiting Christmas time and hope for better luck next time around! (And in case you were wondering, we have had no more signs of sickness since we have been home--what horrible timing!)

Here are some fun pictures of the good times we did have in between all the illness:

Ella went crazy for Corn-on-the-Cob at my Mom's house. She sat there for at least 15 minutes just chewing away on the cob!

Family photo op at the park

Ella's first time rolling down a hill with Daddy (there are no opportunities for that in coastal Virginia as their are NO hills to speak of

The birthday girl at her early birthday party

Being sneaky and yanking cousin Emily's hair while the adults are busy with their cameras

Playing with her birthday balloons. . .by far the favorite thing at the party

Meeting her new cousin Kaden for the first time

Feeding our one and only nephew

It was fun seeing those of you we could see, but we missed seeing everyone else immensely! Anyone want to come out here for a visit so we can see you before Christmas??

Swimming with the Dolphins

One of our opportunities in the Bahamas was so AMAZING I just had to do a separate post about it. Those of you who know me well know I have always had a somewhat abnormal love of dolphins. In fact, when I was a little one I always used to ask my dad for a swimming pool in our backyard, thinking that if I had a swimming pool then I could have a pet dolphin too!
So Brad, being the thoughtful husband that he is, worked it out with his Dad to give me an excursion on this cruise for Christmas where I would get to go swim with the dolphins. Everyone else thought it sounded cool as well, so we all ended up going along and having such a fun time with these awesome animals! I only wish I could do it every day! I would definitely recommend it to anyone else out there if you get the chance! We got to swim along with them, do hand signals to get them to do tricks, and hug and kiss them.
We took a TON of pictures, but I only included a few of them on this here post in hopes that it won't be too boring.

ENJOY!

Cruisin' in the Bahamas

Well, Brad took his boards on Friday,May 30th. . .and we've been running around ever since! Brad's whole family came into town and we left from Norfolk on a cruise to the Bahamas. It was so much fun, and we are so glad that Brad's dad seized this opportunity to take a family vacation.
Kids were not invited on this trip, so my parents came out to watch Ella for the week that we were gone. I'm so glad I had them to watch Ella, otherwise I know I would have been a worried mess the whole trip. Ella was great for them and I think they enjoyed the time they had to bond with their granddaughter.
All in all it was a GREAT time. We ate a TON of food, went parasailing, scuba diving, swimming with the dolphins, and so much more! Here are a few picture highlights of our trip:

And look at the darling little girl we came home to! We missed her so much, but it was fun to get away for a little while. A BIG thanks to Brad's parents and my parents for making all this fun vacationing possible!
